How to block Instagram on iPhone (app and Safari)

Larry V. October 7, 2026 7 min read

To block Instagram on iPhone, block both the Instagram app and instagram.com in your browser. Instagram's own daily limit is only a reminder, so it won't stop you on its own. Here's how to set up a block that holds, and what to do if you still need your DMs.

THE GRID, LOCKEDThe app+instagram.comThe website, in every browser
The short answer

Open Settings, then Screen Time. Under App Limits, give Instagram a 1-minute daily limit with Block at End of Limit turned on. Then go to Content & Privacy Restrictions, open Web Content, choose Limit Adult Websites, and add instagram.com and www.instagram.com to Never Allow. Set a Screen Time passcode, ideally one someone else chooses, so the block holds.

Why Instagram is tricky to block

Instagram isn't one habit, it's several in one app: the feed, Stories, Reels, Explore, and your messages. Most people want to stop the scrolling but keep talking to friends, and that's where blocks tend to fall apart. You open the app "just to reply," and twenty minutes later you're deep in Reels.

It helps to know the limit up front: on iPhone, neither Screen Time nor app blockers can block Reels or the feed while leaving DMs open. iOS blocks whole apps and whole websites. So the real choice is between blocking Instagram completely, giving it a strict daily budget, or blocking it at the times you scroll most. We cover all three below.

Option 1: Instagram's built-in daily limit

  1. In Instagram, go to your profile and tap the menu icon in the top right.
  2. Tap Your activity, then Time spent.
  3. Tap Daily limit, choose an amount of time, and tap Turn on.

This one is the weakest of the three. When you reach the limit, Instagram shows a reminder that you can dismiss and keep scrolling, and you can change or turn off the limit at any time. Instagram also offers break reminders during long sessions, but those are prompts too. It's a useful nudge if you mostly lose track of time, not a block.

Option 2: Block Instagram with Screen Time (free)

This is the same two-part method as our guides to Reddit and TikTok: block the app, then the website.

Step 1: Block the Instagram app

  1. Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
  3. Open the Social category, select Instagram, and tap Next.
  4. Set 1 minute to block it almost entirely, or a real budget like 15 minutes if you want to keep some access.
  5. Turn on Block at End of Limit. This toggle only appears once you've set a Screen Time passcode.

Step 2: Block instagram.com in Safari and other browsers

The website gives you the feed, Stories and Reels without the app, so leaving it open turns Safari into the new Instagram.

  1. In Settings, go to Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions, and turn it on.
  2. Tap App Store, Media, Web & Games (called Content Restrictions on older iOS versions), then Web Content.
  3. Choose Limit Adult Websites to unlock the Never Allow list.
  4. Under Never Allow, add instagram.com and www.instagram.com.

Then test both addresses in Safari and in any other browser you have installed, and add any variant that still loads.

Step 3: Set a passcode you don't know

A Screen Time passcode you chose yourself is easy to type back in. Have a partner or friend set it if you can. We compare this in more detail in Stryct vs Apple Screen Time.

Option 3: Block Instagram with Stryct

  1. Open Stryct and go to the Blocklist tab.
  2. Under Apps, tap Add App and select Instagram.
  3. Switch to Websites, tap Add Website, and add instagram.com.
  4. Choose how the block runs: Block Now for a full break from 15 minutes up to 30 days, Daily Ration for a daily budget that locks until midnight once it's used up, or Schedules to block it during set hours, like evenings.

Once a session starts, there's no snooze and no button inside Stryct to end it early, and uninstall protection keeps you from deleting the app mid-session.

What about Instagram DMs?

Since you can't block the feed and keep messages on iPhone, pick the trade-off that fits you:

  • Move important conversations. If a few people matter, ask them to text you or use another messaging app. Then a full Instagram block costs you almost nothing.
  • Use a small daily budget. A Daily Ration of 10 to 15 minutes is enough to answer messages, and tight enough that a Reels session burns through it quickly.
  • Block only your scrolling hours. If you mainly scroll at night, a schedule from 9 p.m. to the morning leaves the app open for messages during the day.

How to make the block stick

  • Close the Reels side door. If you block Instagram and start watching TikTok or YouTube Shorts instead, add those to the same blocklist. Our TikTok guide covers the same setup.
  • Turn off Instagram notifications. In Settings, then Notifications, switch Instagram off so likes and Stories don't pull you back in between blocks.
  • Log out of instagram.com in every browser. A logged-in tab is the easiest way around an app-only block.
The Stryct team's take, clearly labeled as opinion

Instagram's own limit asks you to stop. Screen Time asks for a passcode you already know. Both rely on the version of you that's already mid-scroll. Decide on your Instagram time once, while you're thinking clearly, and let the block hold it for you.

Can I block Instagram on iPhone without deleting the app?
Yes. In Settings, then Screen Time, then App Limits, give Instagram a 1-minute daily limit and turn on Block at End of Limit, which requires a Screen Time passcode. The app stays installed but locks after a minute each day. An app blocker like Stryct can also block it for a set session without deleting it.
Does Instagram's daily limit actually block the app?
No. Instagram's daily limit, found under Your activity, then Time spent, only shows a reminder when you reach your chosen time. You can dismiss it and keep scrolling, and you can change or turn off the limit at any time.
Can I block Instagram Reels but keep DMs on iPhone?
Not with Screen Time or an app blocker, because iOS blocks whole apps and websites rather than parts of them. The closest options are a short daily budget that leaves time for messages, a schedule that blocks Instagram only during your scrolling hours, or moving key conversations to another messaging app.
How do I block instagram.com in Safari on iPhone?
Go to Settings, then Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions. Under Web Content, choose Limit Adult Websites, then add instagram.com and www.instagram.com to the Never Allow list. Test both addresses in Safari and in any other browser you use.
